The main program of the Department of Art History is titled «Russian - European Interaction of Artistic Codes». Lectures and seminars constituting this program are based on interdisciplinary and comparative methods of research. This widens and enriches the horizons of professional scholars independent of their concrete specializations.
Traditional art history is a rather narrow discipline. In Russia, historically it has often occurred that art history and criticism was practiced by historians, or occasionally – theory of painting, graphics, sculpture, and decorative-applied art – by architects. Theater, film and especially literature and music are, as a rule, beyond the scope of the educational program. The Department’s task is to train specialists who are able to understand different artistic languages and facilitate their dialogue; the educational process in the Department is organized so that various spheres of art demonstrate their mutual transferability.
