The Centre initially called the Centre for European Studies (CES) was established as a subdivision of the European University at St. Petersburg in April 2003. The objective its founders saw as the main one was to introduce the European studies dimension to the students and professors from the EUSP and to further expand this dimension at the University. During the subsequent years the CES developed three main fields of activities, namely (1) research, (2) education and (3) networking in order to build a full-fledged research network.
In between 2003 and 2010 the Centre has implemented a number of projects devoted to the diverse aspects of European studies; among them two Tempus projects (UNEGO and PREGO), 'New Modes of Governance' project, seminars 'EU Study weeks', PROBALT project, etc. In 2007 the 'European Studies' series was launched as a part of the Tempus UNEGO project. Finally, by the year 2010 the Centre has established close links with several research institutes and universities from the EU countries such as the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki, the Free University of Berlin, the University of Genoa etc. For further information on the CES and its projects, both implemented and current, check the tab 'CES profile'.
In December 2010 following the decision of the Academic Council of the EUSP, the Centre was renamed as the Centre for European Studies – EU Centre (CES – EU Centre) due to the new project called 'The development of the Centre for European Studies – EU Centre in Northwest Russia' that the Centre was to implement. The development of the EU dimension that the project aimed at started already in 2010. It has been carried out fully in line with the methods and principles of the worldwide EU Centres network launched by the European Commission already in 1998. For further information on the 'EU Centre' project check the tab 'EU Centre'.
