About

The European University’s many friends in Europe and North America have long hoped for a way they might easily assist in supporting the University’s many programs, and help assure the University retains its vital and unique position in present-day Russia and the region. This opportunity finally became possible in 2004 with the establishment of the Fund for the European University at St Petersburg. As detailed below, the Fund is a dedicated tax-exempt «friends» organization, governed by its own Board of Directors. The Fund for the European University was created by a group of distinguished scholars from Western Europe and the United States convinced in the unique nature of the EUSP.

Although the Fund is by law fully separate from the EUSP, its Directors report annually on its activities to the EUSP Board of Trustees, and seek the Trustees’ counsel as to how its resources might best be used on the University’s behalf. The Fund is thus a central aspect of the EUSP’s new Development Strategy. Its short-term goal is to help assure the EUSP remains sustainable in a difficult and changing economic and political climate. It seeks funding for particular projects, new initiatives, and other elements of the University’s ongoing programs. Over the longer term, it hopes to assist in the establishment of a permanent EUSP endowment.

The European University at St Petersburg is a non-governmental graduate research university established in 1994 with the broad support of international organizations and individuals. It was founded with the aim of supporting the transformation of social sciences in post-Soviet Russia, and its research and teaching focus is on history, sociology, political sciences, ethnology, and economics.

The Fund for the European University at St Petersburg, incorporated in Michigan, is fully accredited as a tax-exempt organization under section 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code (EIN 59-3780793). Contributions to the Fund are deductible under section 170 of the Code, and the Fund is qualified to receive tax-deductible bequests, devises, transfers, or gifts under sections 2055, 2106 and 2522 of the Code. As a dedicated «friends» organization with 509 (a) (3) status, all contributions to the Fund must be used by its Board of Directors to advance the programs, interests, and goals of the EUSP.
