SEMESTER ABROAD
Undergraduate module in Russian politics, history, and culture

The semester abroad module for mature undergraduates includes classes in Russian history, politics and culture as well as the intensive Russian language classes.  It draws upon the resources and experience of the renowned International MA in Russian studies but is tuned to the requirements of the western undergraduate training.  Throughout the spring semester in Saint Petersburg students will receive professional academic training in the Russian area studies and get a diverse personal experience of the Russian society.  The courses in history and culture will include on-site classes in cultural and historical venues of Saint Petersburg. All instruction is in English.

Workload and credits

The standard workload during the 14-week semester corresponds to 15 US or 30 ECTS credits.  It includes the choice of three courses from the main curriculum, each taught for 4 academic hours per week (one academic hour equals 40 minutes).  Russian language is taught for 8 hours per week.  The overall number of contact hours is 20 per week plus homework.

Delivered through lectures and seminar sessions for which home reading is assigned, each course involves submitting one or two essays.  In the Russian language classes students are assigned to groups corresponding to their proficiency level: beginners, intermediary and advanced.

The language classes are concluded with an official evaluation.  The number of credits is 9 for the subject courses and 6 for the Russian language (18 and 12 ECTS credits respectively).

Upon a special request the workload can be reduced to fit the requirements of the home university, but the reduction cannot exceed 1/3 with the minimum of 10 US or 20 ECTS credits.

Main curriculum (the list will be revised with more course details given by the fall 2009):

• Contemporary Russian Politics
• The Political Economy of the Post-Soviet Transition
• The History of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union
